“Not Always What They Appear” The musicians were eating a fine hot meal on this eighteenth birthday of our own dear J. Sebastian. The day may have been the first day of springtime, but it was cold and snowy. Suddenly Adelheid Menser, the mayors thirteen years old daughter burst in and called out, “Jenna! Come Quickly! My Sister Is About To Deliver Her Child!” Without hesitation, my niece ran and got her coat on and in no time was ready to leave with Adelheid. They ran out into the cold dark morning. “Many happy frigid returns of the day to you dear J. Sebastian.” Pach said as he personally brought J. Sebastian more coffee. “Ah Pach. You certainly know the way to a persons heart my boy.” The grateful Bach said. We all laughed at this idea. After two hours Jenna came back. She looked tired and dragged, “Jenna? Are you well child?” I asked concernedly, “Yes Uncle. I am only tired. I must rest for a short time before I can resume.” She said, “Of course. Take your time girl.” I said, Viktor thought something was strange about this, but he could not place it just then, so he said nothing. Soon, Jenna came out of the back room. She had on her coat still and came to Pach and purred, “Johann. Will you come for a walk with me? Please?” Her words startled Pach who would rather have stayed in where it was warm, to celebrate J. Sebastian’s birthday with him. But he was too much a gentleman to refuse a ladies request. “Of course Jenna. If you like.” He said as he rose to his feet and put on his cape and neck scarf and his warm gloves. They left and I watched as they crossed Canon Lane onto Oboe Avenue. “I do wish they had stayed here and had some nice hot soup.” I said as they vanished from sight. “Or at least some nice hot coffee.” J. Sebastian said as he banged the mug on the side of my hand. “Yes young sire. At once my liege.” I said jestingly, and everyone present laughed about it. Meanwhile in the cold storm Pach walked on quietly with Jenna. This was rather unlike Jenna who was not a great admirer of the cold, but would rather sit by a fire reading a book instead. He felt a tingle in the Kinetic’s Eye warning of pending danger, but what danger could there be walking in Vienna with my niece? Instead he asked, “What did Frauline Menser have?” “What do you mean?” Jenna asked in an unfamiliar voice, this made Pach stop in his tracks, “Did she deliver a boy or a girl child?” He asked the next part of the question. “Oh that. Neither.” Came an unfamiliar voice again, “What do you mean Jenna?” Pach gasped, “It was a spawn of evil!” Came the cracked croaking voice of the evil sorceress, Gliden Subrad, who had taken over the body of my poor niece in an attempt to trap Pach, and it had worked to her advantage. “Sweet Savior!” Pach barely had time to gasp when a heavy fist rendered him unconscious. Back at my inn in the meantime, Antonio was suddenly seized by a massive headache. It brought tears to his eyes it was so horrific. “Are you well Antonio?” J. Sebastian asked his friend, “Yes. I am now.” Antonio said as the pain subsided as quickly as it began. It was indeed very unusual. With this collection of young people I have come to expect the unusual, especially with Pach. When Pach finally revived, he found himself tied to a huge wooden cross. He was tied crucifix fashion. His Kinetic’s Eye was blindfolded so Elipta could not aid her Master. Pach looked down from the cross into the eyes of the one he thought was Jenna, his kindred and soul mate. Instead he was greeted by the sight of her standing there with a fully loaded crossbow in her hands. “Jenna! No! What Are You Doing?” He screeched, as he was actually stricken with fear the likes of which few had ever known in this boy. “It is gratifying to me to see fear in your eyes just seconds before you die. Farewell Warlock!” Gliden said coldly as she released the arrow and it impaled Pach’s heart. With a single scream of pain, he gasped and died. Antonio was taken too the floor by a dreadful pain in his chest exactly where the killer arrow had stricken Pach. Antonio could not catch his breath, he was dying. I ran to Antonio while J. Sebastian bolted out of the inn to fetch the physician. In his haste he ran onto Dwyler Road where his eyes met the tragic sight of…”Pach! Son Of God, No!” He was in shock, but remembered he had to get the physician before Antonio also died. He continued on to the physicians house and got Physician Adelsen and they ran back to my inn. They ran in only to find Antonio much better. “Are you alright Don Antonio?” Physician Adelsen asked, “I am thank you kind sir.” Antonio answered. After the physician left J. Sebastian said, “But Pach is not.” “What do you mean J. Sebastian? He is with Jenna.” I said, “No Reuben. Pach is dead. I just saw him.” J. Sebastian insisted. “What?” Antonio breathed softly. “Come I will show you.” J. Sebastian said and we all left with him to the gruesome sight on Dwyler Road. When Antonio and I saw the awful scene Antonio instinctively crossed himself and I gasped and cried out, “Son Of God!” There was the tell tale sign of the deed completed, Pach was dead. Antonio climbed onto a low tree near the cross and cut Pach free. I caught the pitiful little body and lovingly held him close to me. I carried him back to the Green Dragon and carried him upstairs to room 13. I laid him on the bed and caressed his forehead. Then I suddenly asked, “Where is Jenna?” “I thought something was very wrong when she came back from the mayors home. Kristeni Menser did not have her child as yet. And there was no blood or after birth anywhere on Jenna’s being. So she could not have delivered a child. Or so it is to my knowledge. Besides, when she came in, she said nothing of the birth which as you know Reuben, she would surely have done.” Viktor said, “Santa Maria! You are right Viktor!” Antonio said as he ran down the stairs and stopped at Pach’s place long enough to grab the Gauntlet of Power. Then out he ran into the unknown. He did not know what Gliden Subrad looked like and that made him fearful of what he might find otherwise. After an hour of searching, he found Jenna walking carefree and humming to herself. It was not really Jenna, he knew that. He ran towards her and called, “Gliden!” Forgetting her hiding place for a split second, the old witch revealed her true self to the priest. “Begone From This Child! The Innocent Jenna Weber Shall Not Suffer On Your Behalf Witch!” Antonio shouted as he produced a gold crucifix. Gliden lunged at Antonio who tagged her forehead with the crucifix. It burned her and she creamed in pain. She lunged at him again and again he tagged her and it burned her so that she actually abandoned the body of Jenna. Then the witch in her full horrific form faced Antonio and with a wicked growl she drew her staff and swung it at the young priest. Antonio flung the Gauntlet of Power up to deflect the blow, which it did and in fact, the force of the staff slamming against the Gauntlet made it reel back and hit Gliden between her eyes. This sent the evil Queen of BlackDomain back to her realm in defeat. As soon as she was vanquished, Antonio helped Jenna home to the inn and was relived to find Pach, weakened, but now alive. Jenna offered to care for him since she had been to object used to harm him. Pach consented as he sensed old Gliden was gone… However, assuredly, not for good, unfortunately. Code: NAWTS1695
