"The Kinetic"

Pach returned home to Vienna after a lengthy tour in the far off land called Britain. He toured England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. I envied him his tour, as I loved these lands so dearly. He was tired and hungry. The day was May 6th in the year 1695. Pach rode into town, stopped at the stables, and put Orion to bed. After feeding, watering and brushing the ravenesque beauty, he blanketed him and then headed for the inn. He entered to a shocking event. My usually gentle niece, Jenna stepped forward to him, "Good afternoon Jenna." Pach said warmly, he was greeted, instead of with words, with a vicious blow to his fair face from Jenna. He was so shocked he could not speak. "Murderer! You Killed Them Both And Then You Have The Nerve To Show Your Face Here?" She screamed at him, she raised her hand to deliver another and he stopped her hand in mid air with his own fast reflexes, "What do you mean?" Pach demanded, "Do Not Play Coy With Us, Murderer! Everyone In Vienna Knows You Committed Those Crimes! Now Get Out Of Here Before I Kill You With My Bare Hands!" My usually calm and collected assistant Viktor said with great hostility in his voice. "What murders? What are you talking about Viktor?" Pach demanded, but the Dutch giant flung little Pach out the door. Pach turned to find his belongings unceremoniously thrown into the streets as Jenna and Viktor had evicted him with out my knowledge. Where was I you ask? I was away in Belgium getting supplies and recipes from my brother, Myron. Pach gathered his belongings and wandered about trying to find a place to put his things. He thought, ‘Saint Peter’s. If any one will take me in Antonio will.’ He was, of course, right, had Antonio been there, which he was not.
Pach entered Saint Peter’s church to the scene of two funerals. The priest at the altar was definitely not Antonio. Pach stared in disbelief, "What is going on here?" He asked. A man nearest the door turned and called out, "Here He Is! Here Is The Murderer!" And with that, several men surrounded Pach. The kinetic was surprised but did nothing startling, then they moved in and took him prisoner. These men began beating on the helpless one with walking sticks and their very fists. Pach screamed in astonishment. "What Are You Doing?" He cried out, some of the women pulled at his long blond hair and scratched at him viciously, it was as though a pack of wild wolves had attacked a single innocent lamb, which may as well have been the case.
At that moment, Sheriff Kristoff Toffin showed up and took control of the situation, "Leave Him Be! I Will Take Charge Here! The Next One Who Lays A Hand On Him Will Be Arrested! Is That Clear?" The good sheriff shouted angrily. The grumbling crowd dispersed grudgingly, Sheriff Toffin told Pach, "You had better come with me, for your own protection child." "What do you mean? Why did they do that to me? Whose funerals were those? Where is Antonio and J. Sebastian?" Pach asked anxiously, he was terrified. Never, since his encounter with Gliden in Rotterdam, had he been so sorely treated. "Pach. They did that because they feel you committed two horrific murders. And the answer to whom you were supposed to have murdered, answers your next question. The funerals are those of J. Sebastian Bach and Don Antonio Vivaldi. Pach please, just come with me so you will be safe." Sheriff Toffin said kindly, he was so fond of this wayward young warlock. He took Pach into custody; Pach was so stunned he could not think right. The vicious crowd followed them to the jailing house; among them were Martinique, Jenna and Viktor. Before they reached the building the crowd began pitching stones and shouting at them, "Hand Him Over Toffin! He Deserves To Die! Just Like He Did To Bach and Don Antonio!" One angry man shouted, "Hang The Warlock!" Another shouted, "Burn Him Alive!" A woman shouted, "Drive A Stake Through His Black Heart!" Another woman shouted, everyone was shouting at once. Pach felt dizzy and faint. His head pounded with the stress of these events. Sheriff Toffin shouted, "Anyone Who Dares Touch Him Will Be Dealt With Severely! Mark My Words Citizens Of Vienna!" When the good sheriff looked Pach over, he noticed the boy had gashes on his face, arms and throat. His clothing was ripped and he was bruised where stones had hit him and where they had hurled mud balls at him, the young kinetic was now filthy as well. "He Will Be Tried For His Crimes Toffin! He Will BE Found Guilty! Let Us Exact Judgment And Be Done Of It!" Jenna shouted, "It Is Not Your Place To Judge Him Mistress Weber! Not Even You And Your Good Uncle Can! And I Wish Reuben Were Here Now To Warm Your Skirt Side Young Lady!" The sherrif shouted, Jenna then shouted, "Why Do You Defend Him?" "Because He Is A Human Being, Not An Animal! Even An Animal Deserves Better Treatment Than You Are Giving Him! Now Begone The Lot of You!" The sheriff shouted angrily. The angry crowd thinned out some and Sheriff Toffin came and said to Pach. "What I am about to do I would rather die that do. It is however, what I have to do. I hereby charge you with the murders of Johann Sebastian Bach and Don Antonio Vivaldi." "What? What do you mean they are dead? How? How did this happen?" Pach asked, "According to the reports, you committed these atrocities. I, personally, do not believe these charges, but they do, so, I am charging you for a reason to keep you safe from them." Sheriff Toffin said, "They would harm me?" Pach asked in surprise, "Child, they would kill you if they had the chance." Sheriff Toffin said seriously, "Will I have to stand trial?" Pach asked, the sheriff sighed and said, "Yes. They insist on this." Pach's eyes filled with tears and he fell silent. Sheriff Toffin put him in a cell and locked him in safely.
Pach was silent and withdrawn, he was confused, J. Sebastian and Antonio? Dead? He, accused of the crime? Unthinkable! Jenna, Viktor and Martinique turned on him? Horror filled his sweet mind, 'No! Antonio! J. Sebastian! No! Oh, Reuben, where are you?' He thought to himself. His sad eyes cast towards the 'Green Dragon' inn. He felt betrayed by all he thought loved him and cared for him. He sat on the lonely bed and wept, he was sad, confused and afraid. Yes, my Pach was afraid. He tried to sleep late at night, but his sleep was disturbed by townsfolk throwing things at the window of Pach’s cell and shouting at him, "Go Kill Yourself Warlock! It Is The Only Right Thing To Do!" And other such horrible things. Pach could only sit frozen with terror and the bitter tears fell from his usually laughing eyes. He was betrayed, he was alone.
It was another three days before I had gotten home when I noticed the huge crowd still near the jailing house, I wondered who was being held. "Stav. Who is in the holding house?" I asked the giant Norseman, "Tragically Weber! Tis ye Kitten. He stands accused o' th' murders o' Antonio an' J. Sebastian." He answered, "What? Pach? What are you saying Stav?" I asked, "What did yer hear me say, Weber? They have accused me Kitten o' murderin' Antonio an' J. Sebastian, is what I said." Stav said steadily, "God of Martin Luther! Not Pach!" I said sadly, "What I said Weber. I da na' believe that child murdered anyone ana more then I be an choirboy." Stav said, "Thank you Stav. I am glad you hold to Pach's innocence." I said, "I haf to. Th' child is not a murderer." Stav said. "I have to go see him." I said, and Stav went with me. We walked in and I asked Sheriff Toffin, "I wish to speak to Pach." I said, "At last. Of course Weber. It has been three days since his arrest and he has not said a word since I put him in there, nor has he eaten nor drunk anything. Please help him Weber." The kind-hearted sheriff fairly begged. He said, and led Stav and I in to speak to Pach, "Pach, my little one?" I called, he sat silent and unmoving. He did not lift his head nor did he move a single muscle. "Pach. It is me, Reuben." I called, still he did not move at all. "I will go bring him some food and tea." I said, "Good thinking. This has been a traumatic experience to that child. I would be eternally grateful Weber, if you feed him." Sheriff Toffin said, "Of course I will feed him. I cannot allow him to starve." I said and I took myself to the inn. Stav went on to his work as a carpenter. I went in and said, "I must take Pach some food." "Why bother, Uncle? Just let that foul murderer starve to death." Jenna said coldly, "What? What are you saying? I thought you cared about him?" I said, "Care? For him? Hmph! Maybe once upon a time I did, but that was before I learned he was a cold blooded murderer." She said, "Jenna, surely you do not believe such nonsense." I said, "I do. I saw him do it." Jenna said strongly, "As did I Reuben." Viktor said, "Impossible. Pach is no murderer. You both know it." I said steadfastly. "We both saw him do it Uncle. There is no use in trying to change the fact, the boy I thought I loved is a cold blooded murderer." Jenna maintained, "He is no such a thing Jenna Anne. I will find out what is going on here." I said in an offended tone. "Reuben. I liked that boy as much as any one else. Do you think I would speak against him if it were not true?" Viktor said, "I do not know Viktor, but I will not let that child starve because you two have some mad notion that Pach is a murderer." I said. I took myself to the kitchen and sliced off some of the fine roasted beef that was cooked up, I served some steamed spinach and potatoes with butter. I got a mug of tea and took it to the jailing house. I asked the good sheriff to open his cell, which he did. "I truly hope he eats Weber." Sheriff Toffin said doubtfully. "I do too." I said and I took it in to Pach’s cell. "Pach. My little one, please. It is I, Reuben. Please child." I called to him. Finally a terrified little creature peered his fear-drenched eyes at me, I gasped at the sight of this poor pitiful little thing, and my heart sank. "Pach?" I called to him, "Reuben?" He answered in a voice barely audible above a whisper, he sounded like a frighten child, which of course, he was. "My poor child. What in God’s name have they done to you?" I demanded as I took him in my arms after sitting down the tray of food. I looked at the scratches on his face and the rips in his clothing, he sobbed stormily as I held him. I had never known such weakness in my strong boy. "There Pach. It is alright. Please, tell me about this horror." I encouraged him; he stared at me as though he did not know me. "R-Reuben. They tell me I murdered Antonio and J. Sebastian. I swear I did no such thing." He said in a cracked voice which was definitely not his usual sweet musical voice. "I know you did not child. I know you are no murderer." I said, "Jenna does not believe me… Nor does Viktor o-or Martinique." He sobbed, I wondered mostly about Viktor, who never pre-judged anyone no matter the reason. "This is ridiculous! Sheriff, please let him out of here. He lives at the ‘Green Dragon’ inn." I said, "No longer does he." Said Deputy Penzing, a rather unsavory fellow, "I heard Mistress Jenna and Master Helgaar threw him out when they learned of the crimes he had committed." Penzing said, "What? That is an outrage!" I seethed. I asked Pach, "Please eat child." "Alas Reuben I cannot. I do not mean to offend you, but I cannot." He said wearily. "Alright child. Then sleep, please. I will bring you more food later on." I said as I stroked his soft child like hair. He did indeed lie down and fell asleep, if nothing else I would say, out of sheer exhaustion.
I took myself to the inn and fairly demanded of Jenna and Viktor, "How Dare The Both Of You! Who Do You Think You Are? Just Because You Are My Niece, And You Are My Best Friend, You Two Think You Can Evict Pach Without My Consent?" I said furiously, "Uncle, I…" Jenna began, "Silence! I Do Not Care What Your Reasoning Was! You Had No Right To Do This To Him! Either Of You!" I continued on lividly, Viktor stared at me as though I was a stranger, he had never seen this side of me, but then no one had wronged an innocent child before either. "What do you want us to do then Reuben?" Jenna asked, "You May Go To Your Room Young Mistress! You Master Helgaar May Go Home! I Am Closing The Inn Till This Is Resolved!" I shouted in rage. Meekly Jenna ran upstairs to her room and Viktor gathered his cloak and book and left for his Dutch chalet at 1685 Viola Road. Once alone I did as I said I would. I locked the door to the inn, I would not allow anyone save Stav and the young farmer Andru Iversen in, neither of them thought Pach was a murderer, so I allowed them entrance. I fed them and we spoke of what could be done. "The one thing more disturbing is that J. Sebastian was only a bystander. The killer seemed more intent on killing Antonio." Andru said, "Really?" I asked, "Yes sir. For all the world it did look like Pachelbel, but I know it was not, this was most definitely a youth with blond hair, but he was taller and more muscular than Pachelbel." Andru said, "Andru. Are you absolutely sure?" I asked, "Of course Reuben. He was very fine in appearance, which is likely what made everyone think it was the amazing one. Besides he did vanish vie use of a portal as the Warlock does sometimes." Andru said, "Yet you maintain it was not Pach?" I questioned the young farmer, "No. It was the child of Lypeni, the one called the ‘Warlock Fair’." Andru related, "Jeset!" I shouted in a whisper, I then ran as fast as I could to the jailing house, "Sheriff. Andru Iversen knows who the murderer is. It is Jeset of the Haunted Forest." I called to the good sheriff, ""Jeset? Then all is truly lost for poor Pach. There is no way to prove the deeds of Jeset." The sheriff fretted, "Perhaps there is." I said as I hurried out and back to my inn. I mounted Toccata and rode north to Idengaard.
I found the "Dancing Youth" inn owned by my friend, Graf von Brenne. "Graf I need a meal of beef steak and potatoes with your richest beef gravy on the potatoes. And a mug of tea flavored with honey." I requested, "Reuben, what in the name of Mount Olympus are you doing? Do you know whose meal this is?" Graf asked fearfully. "I certainly do." I said as I took the meal and headed for the Haunted Forest of Idengate. I sat it by the sacrificial altar of Jeset and hid. In an instant the beautiful child appeared, his sharp eyes peered around and saw nothing. He took the meal. I ambushed him with a tree limb to the right side of his fair head. This rendered Jeset unconscious and I lifted him and placed him on Toccata’s back I mounted my horse behind the boy, and took him back to Vienna.
When I got there the townsfolk had revolted and stormed the jailing house and taken Pach by force. The terrified child cried, he knew they were set to execute him. He was too weak to fight them. After they tied him to the burning circle, they ripped his shirt from him, used a coach whip on him, and beat that poor child mercilessly. His body bled and he was afraid and sad, he was certain this was his end. ‘How could they do this to me?’ He wondered. In truth, he could have spirited himself away via his swift portal, but then he would lose the trust of these towns folk. Was this the end of my little Pach? Surely not. I rode up behind the furious crowd and shouted, "Stop! Do Not Light That Fire!" The townsfolk turned to see who had called for this stay of execution. "Here is your murderer. Jeset Decaden of Idengate. He is the one responsible for this. Tell them the truth Jeset." I demanded of the child I held onto, Jeset was strong, very strong and stubborn as a month of Sabbath Days.
"lleh ni tor." Was all he said in the reverse tongue. "Stubborn like your father, are you Jeset?" I said and dismounted Toccata and dragged Jeset to the burning circle. "Let us reveal the guilty party here. If Pach is guilty, so he shall burn in the flames. If Jeset is guilty, then he will burn. Agreed?" I asked the town of Vienna, "Agreed Weber. But We Already Know The Warlock Will Burn Then!" One man shouted, "Yes, but which warlock? Is it the Black Forest Warlock, or the Warlock Fair?" I asked. "Alright then Reuben, conduct your challenge." Viktor said. I had them tie Jeset to the stake beside Pach and pile kindling around him. The stunned warlock was so astonished that he did not know how to react. "Light the fires." I said and Jeset cried out, "No! I Confess, I Did The Deeds! I Confess! It Was Not Pachelbel!" "Why? Why did you kill them Jeset?" I demanded, "My grandmother, Gliden demanded their lives as Vivaldi is the second to the Champion of the Gauntlet, and with him dead would leave the Champion vulnerable. Bach simply got in the way, is all!" Jeset said anxiously, "Gliden! I might have

known.Do you repent your sins child of Idengate?" I asked the boy, "Never!" He spat through gritted teeth, "Then die in peace Jeset." I said and nodded for them to burn him alive. "Noooooooooooooooo!" Jeset screamed but the flames crept higher up on his plank. "ereh morf em ekat, rehtaF" And in the blink of an eye Satanik’s hand reached out and took his eldest son away from Vienna. Then the towns folk realized they very nearly killed an innocent child. "Oh, Johann, can you forgive us?" Jenna asked as she ran to her loved one, Pach shied away from her, it was an honest reaction after the way eh was treated. I personally took his things back to his room with him in tow and laid him down to sleep.
In the meantime, J. Sebastian and Antonio had revived. Antonio now sat back at his helm as the priest of Saint Peter’s church again. Both came to see Pach to make sure he was alright after his horrific ordeal. "Oh! Antonio! J. Sebastian! I am so glad you are alright!" He cried out before a wave of pain struck him and he fainted away into unconsciousness. "He will be alright. He just needs sleep is all." I said. The next day, Pach, sore and stiff from the events of the day before, woke. He came down the stairs and found his dear kindred there. Stav, Andru, Viktor, Jenna and Martinique. He sighed a heavy burdenous sound. "Praise be to the Creator." He said. He went outside and I called him over to a posted letter in the town circle. It was a formal apology signed by the entire city of Vienna. Pach smiled and said, "Under the circumstances I cannot hold it against them though." I embraced him as I thought, ‘What a fine piece of work you are Johann Pachelbel. And I would not have you any other way.’
